Jeremy Dwyer is a professional software developer who studies applied statistics. However, science and math are not his only interests. When he was in grade school, he was fascinated by horror stories like Count Dracula and Frankenstein’s Monster and pirate stories like Treasure Island. When Jeremy was 18, he had an idea to write about a world of magic oceans, where each ocean provided a different power. However, he delayed the writing of the story because graduate school, work and family always kept him busy. He made a few attempts in his twenties and thirties, but he wasn’t quite ready to write the story in detail.
At the age of 41, with graduate school no longer occupying his spare time, Jeremy began writing the first book in the series—Potion Voyages Book 1: Castle & Conceit. He developed the complex details of the world and its enchanted oceans, including their different magic energies. The most powerful ocean is that of song. Jeremy wrote original song lyrics, and the characters sing these songs in the book, to achieve amazing effects, such as discovering secrets, summoning storms, building cities, enchanting empires and traveling to other dimensions. He hired professional musicians to compose music, sing the lyrics that he wrote and produce completed songs. What inspired you to write your first book?
I wanted to explore the nature of magic when it was available everywhere to every person, and it came in various forms. There are 13 oceans in the world of my book series, and 12 of them provide elemental energies to those who drink their water — light, dark, spirit, music, time, crystal and more. However, only 1 magic ocean may be chosen by any single person, binding for life. The choice is sometimes difficult. Alliances are formed because characters do not always have all the magic they need when acting alone, due to that limit.
Also, the oceans are more than a source of energy to allow characters to cast spells. The oceans are vast and mysterious, and they are extensively traveled across. There are many ways to get lost, many hidden dangers, and numerous secret islands to be discovered. For example, the ocean whose waters provide spirit magic (to those who drink of it) is also haunted, and it is horrifyingly treacherous for travelers, no matter what magic ocean water they happen to drink.
How did you come up with the title?
The title of the series is Potion Voyages. This represents the idea of perpetual travel across the world of magic oceans. After publishing my second book, I actually registered that series title as a trademark.
The subtitle of the first book is Castle & Conceit. There is a magical device known as the constructor, which gathers crystals and uses them to create castles. It also works as a magic weapon. There is a conceited prince who is the antagonist, although he is not alone in committing evil acts.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Every form of magic is very dangerous. Good intentions when using magic are not sufficient to prevent tragedies. Humans are not safe from the consequences of casting spells. Neither are demons nor angels. Magic is extremely powerful, especially magic music.
What books/authors have influenced your writing?
Frankenstein, Treasure Island, and The Hobbit have had the biggest influence on my writing. I enjoy stories of corruption and evil magic, quests for treasure, mysteries and travel to exotic locations.
What genre do you consider your book(s)?
These books are fantasy musicals. The music is essential — energetic, mysterious, enchanting, dangerous and inspiring — and it should all be listened to. Songs accomplish amazing things — both good and evil — in my books.
Do you write an outline before every book you write?
Yes, I do write outlines. I need to have the basic ideas and plot thread connections worked out in detail before I begin. I also need to write the song lyrics during the outline stage, because I send these to the musicians to begin composing the music and recording the vocals.
What is your favorite theme/genre to write about?
Travel and tragedy, music and mystery, corruption and chaos, ancient secrets and awe-inspiring successes are the main themes of my books.
How do you relax?
I relax by playing card and board games with my family, including Ticket to Ride, Dominion, Star Realms, Forbidden Island, and Five Crowns. We also enjoy the Mario Party series of video games.

Do you feel like it’s most important to have A) Strong characters B) Mind-blowing Plot twists or C) Epic settings?
The plot twists and the epic settings are essential. When they are properly developed, everything else will follow.
