Author Q&A

What inspired you to write your first book?

I have been a storyteller all my life and have written many books, but what got me to take a chance with my first self-published book “Magic In A Tub” was my wife Patricia Ann Dodson and Christian Alayna Dodson saying she would help me with my books.

How did you come up with the title for your most recent book?

I wanted a word to help people understand what the book’s origin was mainly about. Archmage Definition, as I know it to be, is a great magician, wizard, or enchanter. So, the series is Archmage with the title of the book besides that.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

No message, just a good old story with no intent behind it.

How much of the book is realistic?

The book is fantasy and takes place in a different world, so the whole thing is fantasy. Because of my memory problem, I used a lot of names from family members just so I could remember to whom I would be talking about but the name was just names and not of their characters in real life. It was just to help me with memory.

What book are you reading now?

My aunt Carolyn Arrowood Harrod wrote a book called “Critters In The House,” which I received from her in April 2014. She also recently wrote “Sixty-Three Years.” I did my very best to read most of those books. I did have to put the books down and take breaks. I still never was able to finish “Critters In The House,” but I did finish “Sixty-Three Years.” I love my aunt Carolyn and my uncle George Ross Harrod. Ross died on February 5th, 2021. It was a loss to the world and the family.

What are your current projects?

I am working on the Archmage series. I am working on getting Archmage Farewell to the Old World out to the world and trying to advertise and promote it. “Archmage Search for a New Home” is with my editor Annie Jenkinson who is an editor out of Lendalfoot, Girvan, UK. “Archmage Introductory to Magic” is with Christina Alayna Dodson is doing our final editing before giving it over to Annie Jenkinson. I also have some other books I am working on outside the Archmage series.

Do you see writing as a career?

It is a career if I can sell enough books to keep me going.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

I don’t think so, or at least not at this point.

What genre do you consider your book(s)?

This has been very hard for me to understand. My book is all made up, making them Fiction, but it is also from my mind, so Fantasy. But believe my Archmage series is an Adventure. It also has a good amount of Action and romance; my main charters are young adults. So, isn’t it also Young Adult? I once said it is Family Fantasy Fiction for “Magic In A Tub,” but someone said that was incorrect and that I should just say Fantasy. I truly don’t know to this day. I do know it is Fantasy first, so I am going with Fantasy.

Who is the most supportive person in your life when it comes to your writing?

My wife Patricia Ann Dodson, then my daughter Christina Alayna Dodson but my whole family have been very supportive. Christian Alexander Dodson was the first to buy my “Archmage Farewell to the Old World” book. He even got the paperback book before I did. Connor Arron Dodson bought two of my “Magic In A Tub” books. I love my family, and they love me. That is the best thing in the world to me, and I thank God every night when I pray for giving me such a great wife and family.

How do you relax?

I love to watch Reality Television with my wife, Patricia Ann Dodson. We love Big Brother, Survivor, The Amazing Race, Hell’s Kitchen, So You Think You Can Dance (we will miss you, Twitch), etc. My wife and I also love playing video games together and yes, we both played Fortnite and are currently playing Hogwarts Legacy. We can’t wait until the new Zelda come out on the Nintendo Switch. I also love playing with my grandson Jasper Alexander Dodson.

What is your favorite movie, and why?

Wow, so many. I can’t pick one. Growing up, Xanadu with Olivia Newton-John was my life saver movie. It is a musical, so, kind of hard to believe because nowadays I don’t care so much for musicals. Back to the Future is one of my greats. Star Wars is one of my favorite Sci-Fi. So many more, like Labyrinth with David Boyd and Jennifer Connelly. I could go on and on.

Which famous person, living or dead, would you like to meet and why?

I would have loved to have met Olivia Newton-John, but Steven Spielberg is the most person I would like to meet that is still alive. In the back of my head, I would love for him to direct Archmage and turn it into a great movie series. That would be awesome!

What is your favorite positive saying?

My saying or quote is, “Always look into the clouds and see the beautiful things you can find.”
