The United States leads the way when it comes to podcasts, there are more people listening to podcats in the United States than anywhere else in the world. Being in the top 5 most listened to podcasts is definitely a big deal for the creators and people working in the production.

Edison research, a market research company, recently released their Q3 figures for the top 50 podcasts in the country. Their figures are based on listening data, rather than downloads.

Here are the current top 5 most listened podcasts in the U.S.

5. Stuff You Should Know

Hosts Josh Clark and Chuck Bryant, have you covered on a wide variety of topics. Podcast creators say "if you've ever wanted to know about champagne, satanism, the Stonewall Uprising, chaos theory, LSD, El Nino, true crime and Rosa Parks, then look no further".

Over 1824 Episodes later since they debuted in 2008, and they are in the top five of the country's most favourite podcast.

4. This American Life

A weekly public radio program and podcast hosted by Ira Glass.This American Life (TAL) boasts over 2 million listeners weekly. According to the creators, the show is mainly a journalistic program "but an entertaining kind of journalism that's built around plot. In other words, stories!".

3. Crime Junkie

Hosts Ashley Flowers and Brit Prawat, were real life crime junkies growing up, in fact their friendship when they were kids was solid due to their shared love for true crime stories. Their podcast covers grim murders,serial killers and missing persons and listeners are hooked.

The podcast debuted in 2017 and aside from being in the top 5 most listened to podcats, 500 million people have also downloaded Crime Junkie.

2. The Daily

A daily news podcast and radio show by the The New York Times hosted by journalist Michael Barbaro, whose voice alone keeps you hooked.

Each episode covers what they call "the biggest stories of our time" and are usually based on the New York Times reporting, they have recently covered why Ukraine matters to Vladimir Putin, or the ongoing Ghislaine Maxwell trial in New York. Solid and always interesting.

Hosted by comedian, actor, sports commentator, and television host Joe Rogan, it launched on 2009 by Rogan and his comedian friend Brian Redban. By 2015, it was already one of the most popular podcasts in the world. Creators say that the podcast "is a long form conversation hosted by Joe Rogan with friends and guests that have included comedians, actors, musicians, MMA fighters, authors, and beyond". Congrats Joe because your podcast is the most listened to podcast in the United States!
