The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) announced yesterday the completion of the $259M construction project that was extending the AirTrain electric people mover system to Long-Term Parking.

The recently completed project has extended the AirTrain guideways by 1,900 feet to reach the Long-Term Parking area, running 50 feet above a public roadway, and built a new station with a pedestrian bridge connecting the AirTrain to one of two Long-Term Parking multilevel garage structures.Skanska Constructors and WSP were in charge of the design-build team, and PGH Wong was managing the construction.

AirTrain provides year-round service 24 hours a day, and it is the most convenient and efficient way to to get around the airport, it is free to ride and can be boarded from any terminal. SFO commented;

With this accomplishment, the AirTrain now provides seamless connectivity between all terminals, all parking garages, the on-airport hotel, BART station, and Rental Car Center

The train runs on two routes; the Blue Line which connects the Rental Car Center and Long-Term Parking Garage, and the Red Line, which loops around the terminals. With a top speed of 30mph, a complete loop of the Blue Line takes 25 minutes, and the Red Line, nine minutes.Both Blue and Red lines run every 3 minutes approximately.

SFO estimates that this new construction will help eliminate “600,000 miles of trips annually” as transportation to Long-Term Parking was before provided by shuttle bus.

SFO Airport Director, Ivar C. Satero, said ;

This is the culmination of the long-held ambition for SFO. When the AirTrain opened in 2003, we always envisioned a future project to create this extension to Long-Term Parking. Completing this construction means easier access for travelers, less roadway congestion, and more clean-energy transportation around our Airport. My thanks go out to the entire project team for achieving this milestone in our history.

Back in 2003, the AirTrain was the largest automated people mover in the U.S. and capable of moving 3,000 people per hour in each direction.

SFO is currently offering a parking promotion for those customers who book for Long-Term Parking. They will get half a day of free parking for every one day booked starting on the second day, so the longer the stay, the less it will cost per day.The San Francisco airport provides several options for long-term parking services, including International Parking Garages A and G, Domestic Parking Garage, Parkfast Garage, Long-term garage, and ParkValet.

The beloved San Francisco International Airport was built-in 1927 and it comprises four terminals; one international and three domestic. SFO is the second busiest in California after LAX, the 7th-busiest airport in the USA and the 22nd in the world.

Please remember that if you are travelling to the airport soon, face masks are still required for everyone in their premises until September 13.
