Skip the cream and sugar; try this instead.
When I was a little girl, my parents used to take my sisters and I to the local coffee shop once or twice each month. We ordered food and drinks, sat and talked, and then my parents worked on their laptops while my sisters and I drew and colored.
I still remember my usual order. I always got a chocolate dipped graham cracker, and then my sisters and I split a frozen cookies and cream flavored drink. It was essentially a coffee free Frappuccino.
As I grew older, I ditched the sugary beverage for a drink with better health benefits and a caffeine boost — traditional coffee. Nowadays, I drink hot coffee with a splash of nut milk, a bit of Truvia, and a dash of cinnamon on top. This is the way I have made my coffee for years, and I truly do enjoy it.
However, sometimes I like to switch things up and make a coffee drink with a little more flair. Unlike the blended drinks I used to get as a kid, the ones I make today have minimal added sugar, but they still taste amazing.
Plus, they sneak in extra nutrients, so it’s a double win. The following method makes your drink taste so good that you’ll probably enjoy it even if you aren’t an avid coffee drinker. Here’s how to make your coffee taste incredible in just five simple steps.
1. Gather your ingredients.
To take your coffee to the next level, you will need the following ingredients:
- 1 medium ripe banana (frozen in chunks)
- 1/4 cup brewed and chilled coffee (I love Starbucks peppermint mocha coffee grounds)
- 1/2 tbsp chocolate protein powder (I use Orgain Simple)
- 1 mini candy cane
- coco whip and mini chocolate chips (optional, for topping)
The above ingredients make a vegan chocolate peppermint mocha flavored Frappuccino, but if you omit the candy cane and use a different flavor of coffee, you can make a traditional chocolate Frappuccino.
Unlike the super sweet coffee drinks you might find at a coffee shop, my version uses mostly natural sugar from the banana, so it’s a lot healthier for you. Plus, bananas have been shown to benefit digestion, heart health and weight loss, and blending one up in your coffee drink is an easy way to incorporate it into your diet.
If you like bananas in your smoothies, you will love this recipe. It is actually somewhat similar to a super thick smoothie in terms of consistency and flavor.
2. Blend everything up until smooth.
After you have all the necessary ingredients, you simply have to blend everything up until it is nice and smooth. I use my NutriBullet blender for this step, and it only takes a few minutes.
If you are having trouble getting things to blend, a pro tip is to stop occasionally to move everything around and scrape down the sides to aid the blending. However, if you have a high speed blender or food processor, this step really shouldn't be an issue at all. If your blender is super weak, then it could be hard to get it to blend since the bananas are frozen and have to be ground up into a smooth and creamy mixture.
Obviously, it takes a lot of power to do that, so a high speed blender or food processor certainly makes it much easier to accomplish that.
When I make the peppermint version of this drink, I also save about half of the candy cane to sprinkle on top of the coffee. I throw the other half into the blender and it mixes right in. It also adds a little extra sweetness. Plus, the crushed candy cane topping looks really good on top!
3. Pour the mixture into a cup.
Next, you will want to pour the mixture into a bowl or cup for serving. It will be super thick to begin with. You can either enjoy it with a spoon, or wait for it to melt a little bit.
Alternatively, if you want to thin your drink out a bit, you can add a little more nut milk. I prefer mine thick and super flavorful, so I eat it right away with a spoon.
4. Add the optional toppings.
There are a ton of different toppings you can add to customize the coffee drink in any way that you want.
I typically add some mini chocolate chips to the top of mine. When I make the peppermint version, I also add part of the candy cane, which I crush into pieces with the back of a spoon. You can even add some coco whip or another vegan whipped cream that you enjoy, although it certainly isn’t necessary.
5. Enjoy your incredible coffee.
The final step is to dig right in and enjoy. This coffee drink sneaks in protein and nutrients that will give you energy to power through the day. If you aren’t a huge fan of coffee, or you don’t like to consume a lot of caffeine, this is a good drink for you, as it uses only 1/4 cup of coffee, so the flavor and caffeine content aren’t as strong as a traditional cup of coffee.
No matter how much you enjoy a specific food or beverage, it can be fun to break the monotony and switch things up.
