Read This Before You Decide To Give Up Coffee

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a coffee fanatic. I start every morning off with a fresh, hot cup of coffee and a splash of almond milk. I often drink two (sometimes even three) cups in a single day.

Many people would call this excessive, but I honestly love it. Coffee is something I look forward to every single morning. It gets me excited to get out of bed and start my work day. It's part of my morning routine, and I honestly think my work productivity and efficiency would suffer if it wasn't there as a reward for starting the morning off strong.

Each morning goes a little something like this: right after I wake up, I sluggishly walk downstairs. Then, I fill my small purple refillable coffee pod with my flavored coffee of the moment (it’s currently peppermint stick), and I patiently wait for that beautiful stream of coffee to pour out from my Keurig machine and into my favorite coffee mug. I am currently obsessed with my mickey mouse coffee mug. I have always been a big Disney fan, and it puts a smile on my face each and every morning.

While there’s long been a debate about whether or not coffee is good for you, there is substantial research that shows a number of benefits to drinking a cup or two of coffee each day for many people.

Now, I’m not saying that coffee is for everyone. I know that it’s not. But if you’re anything like me, you already drink coffee daily, and you’ve probably never even considered giving it up. However, if you need a reason to justify your daily consumption of copious amounts of your favorite beverage, here are three.

1. It protects your liver.

We all know that the liver is a crucial organ in the human body. It processes blood leaving the stomach and intestines, regulates chemical levels, and breaks down, balances, and creates nutrients, among other important functions.

Thus, it’s crucial that your liver continues to function properly. Interestingly, research has shown a link between coffee drinkers and liver enzyme levels.

Johns Hopkins Medicine states that:

“Both regular and decaf coffee seem to have a protective effect on your liver. Research shows that coffee drinkers are more likely to have liver enzyme levels within a healthy range than people who don’t drink coffee.”

Whether you enjoy regular or decaf coffee, you can reap the protective effects that it appears to have on the liver. I consider this a solid positive effect of consuming my favorite warm bean water. If you needed a reason to continue drinking coffee, here’s your first one.

2. It enhances your cognitive abilities.

This is one of my personal favorite reasons for drinking coffee, and the one I can actually see tangible results from. I truly do look forward to my early morning cup of coffee, because it perks me up, gets me focused, and helps me power through a few hours of insanely productive work.

When I walk downstairs to make my coffee, I am a groggy, sluggish mess. After I brew it and take that first sip, I already perk up, knowing that I have my favorite beverage in hand and that I'm ready to think.

There is even research to support this phenomenon. Johns Hopkins Medicinestates that:

“We’ve always known that caffeine has cognitive-enhancing effects.”

However, research in more recent years shows even more promise, with coffee linked to improved memory as well:

“Recent Johns Hopkins University research indicates that caffeine may enhance long-term memory. Participants who were given 200-miligram caffeine tablets after studying a series of images were better at distinguishing these same images from similar ones when tested the next day.”

I’ve went without coffee in the morning on a few rare occasions. Unsurprisingly, those were the days where I got less work done and felt less motivated overall to accomplish the tasks I typically look forward to, like getting a run in.

If you want to boost your cognitive abilities and dial in on your work, give a cup of coffee a try. It is a simple yet effective way to help you stay productive. If you already drink coffee, the cognitive effects are just another reason to continue enjoying your favorite beverage.

3. It’s linked to a longer lifespan.

One of the top reasons I focus so much on health and fitness is because I want to live a long and happy life, and I want to help others do the same. As it turns out, coffee has been shown to promote a longer lifespan.

According to Harvard Health,

“Moderate coffee consumption (three to four cups per day) has been linked with longer lifespan. In fact, a November 2015 study in Circulation found that coffee consumption was associated with an 8% to 15% reduction in the risk of death (with larger reductions among those with higher coffee consumption).”

Therefore, even if you drink only one to two cups of coffee per day, you’ll increase your chances of living a longer life.

If you’re someone like me who has been known to occasionally drink three cups in a single day, you actually fall into the category with the higher reduction in risk of death. This reason alone is enough to justify consuming coffee regularly.

Final Thoughts

While coffee can sometimes get a bad reputation for a number of reasons (commonly due to its caffeine content), the mental benefits and energizing effects are reason enough to give it a chance.

Some might argue that my coffee consumption is a bit excessive, but the research I’ve provided shows that just isn’t true. What I can say with 100 percent certainty is that the beverage brings me happiness each and every day.

If the worst habit you have is that you drink a little bit too much coffee each day, I’d say you’re doing pretty well. No one’s diet is perfect, and you ultimately have to maintain a balanced lifestyle and do what brings you joy. After all, life is too short to miss out on even a single cup of your favorite freshly brewed coffee.
