BurgerFi Offers the First Dunkaroos Shake, but it's Only Available in Miami and New York and Only for a Limited Time

Miami Millenials and Gen Xers can get a blast from "lunch-time" past with BurgerFi's launch of the Dunkaroos Shake.

"BurgerFi loves to take favorites and put a spin on them. We always are looking on how to elevate our menu items with classic recipes," says Paul Griffin, BurgerFi's Chief Culinary Officer. "For the Dunkaroos shake, we took our classic vanilla shake and added a fun twist to it by combining it with everyone's favorite '90s snack to allow guests to reminisce back to their childhood. We wanted to recreate that fun, magical experience that our guests felt when they opened their lunchbox and saw the best childhood snack."

BurgerFi, known for 100% natural American Angus beef burgers with no steroids, antibiotics, or growth hormones. The never-frozen fresh-cut fries, onion rings and their frozen custard shakes and concretes are a close runner-up in popularity.

The Dunkaroos shake uses BurgerFi's vanilla custard and mixes it with Dunkaroos cookies. Once the shake is fully mixed, the decadent shake is topped with rainbow sprinkles and more Dunkaroos cookies.

When enjoying the shake BurgerFi suggests "dunking" the extra cookies into the shake to go through the original motions of eating the nostalgic treat. The creaminess of the custard mixed with the chunks of cookie bites really adds different textures that play off each other in the shake to create the ultimate Dunkaroos experience.

Dunkaroos Comeback

The beloved 90's snack, was first introduced in 1992 as the most epic frosting and cookie dunking duo. The snack became a staple in many lunchboxes in the '90s. The frosting was addictive.

The love of Dunaroos was real. There was even an April Fools Day prank article in Heavy Table ran about how Prince kept five pounds of Dunkaroos in his fridge. Dunkaroos was so loved by '90s kids that several publications reran the story and to this day many people still believe it's true.

“Don’t know what 2 say about Dunk-a-roos. They’re just good! Sometimes you want a food that is comfortable and takes you back. For me, it’s those crazy little kangaroo crackers.” ~Fake Prince Quote From Heavy Table

The snack was initially discontinued when General Mills decided to launch more nutritious snacks and after a decline in sales. Dunkaroos was discontinued in the U.S. in 2012.

Loyal Dunkaroos fans kept requesting Dunkaroos be put back on shelves. Some fans even smuggled Dunkaroos in from Canada which still sold Dunkaroos up until 2017.

Some celebrities, such as Kim Kardashian West and started tweeting about missing Dunkaroos.

Dunkaroos magically returned in the summer of 2020. The 2020 pandemic quarantine was a time where everyone started becoming nostalgic. Perfect timing for General Mills to announce a Dunkaroos comeback.

General Mills only brought back the most popular flavor, Vanilla Cookies and Vanilla Frosting with Rainbow Sprinkles.

Since then, BurgerFi knew they wanted to partner with General Mills to offer the famed cookie treat in milkshake form.

"We have a young, dynamic team at BurgerFi in the same age range as many of our guests," said Julio Ramirez, CEO of BurgerFi. "And Dunkaroos was part of their childhood. So we're excited about the idea of taking this fun brand and giving it a BurgerFi twist creating a unique offering with our better than ice cream custard shakes."

The nostalgic Dukaroos Shake will be available for a limited time, from May 10, 2021, until June 13, 2021, or while supplies last in all Miami, Florida, and New York City (Manhattan and Brooklyn) locations.
