THE STORY BEHIND SENDIRI

Sendiri Label is the home of your new favorite everyday basics, with a twist. Every piece is sustainably and ethically made on the beautiful island of Bali, Indonesia. They are the perfect combination of cozy and stylish, suitable for a day out in the city, a chic addition to your yoga outfit, or a night cozied up on the couch.

Each design has a story that evokes a sense of female empowerment, inspiring you to embrace your beauty, power, and strength (with a little cheeky humor thrown in).

Meaning "solo" or "independent" in Indonesian, Sendiri is for anyone who’s ever been told her dreams are too big, her voice is too loud, or her heart is too wild.

This brand hopes to inspire women to wear that proudly, because your truest you — the one who is unapologetic in her intellect, passion, voice for good, and pursuit of the dreams stirring within you —  is so beautiful.

Sendiri was founded this year by two American women living in Indonesia: Alexandra Saper (author of this article, and founder of the The Wayfaress Travel Blog and Instagram), and Allison Kimsey (international English teacher, certified yoga teacher, and millennial poet). The creative vision was sparked over some late-night glasses of wine, and a few tears, reliving moments when our voices were silenced, misunderstood, or rejected. Whether it was an ex-boyfriend, a former employer, a pastor, a friend . . . women all over the world know what it’s like to feel like we’re too much or not enough.

Sendiri’s goal is to empower women across the world to live out their fullest, truest, bravest lives — from our production team to our customers. We hope these shirts put a smile on your face, wrap you up in a cozy (organic) cotton hug, and remind you to live boldly, bravely, and compassionately whenever you wear them.

Ahh, those famous last words. Not that telling a woman to "calm down" has ever been particularly successful (and why should it?? let that passion fly, girl!), but we’re confident that this cozy, oversized cropped tee will do the trick.

Made from 100% organic cotton with a raw hem, ribbed collar, and dainty white cursive lettering, we promise you’ll want to move right into this shirt and never leave.

Styling tip: Perfect for a day doing nothing, a yoga flow, to keep in your purse in case you get cold, or out and about paired with some high-waisted jeans.

“Too Ambitious” Tank

Dream big. Then take those big dreams and make them even bigger, even wilder, even more audacious. And then throw on this bold white “Too Ambitious” tank to tell the world exactly how magnificent you really are. Because we believe that you are meant to shine, and no one can dim that light or dull those glorious ambitions. Dream on, girlfriend!

Made from 100% organic cotton with folded detail on the shoulders and sexy low-cut sides.

Styling tip: Keep it casual by tucking it into your favorite pair of jeans or yoga leggings, or dress it up with a sassy skirt, lacy bralette, and layered necklaces!

Oh heavens, not another — gasp — opinion. I know I know, it certainly isn’t very lady-like to have controversial thoughts in our heads, but we’re going to throw it onto this t-shirt in fat pink letters anyway because we just. don’t. care. Things we do care about: using our brains for good, standing up for what’s right, extra lime in our guacamole, and this ultra-soft cotton tee that’s coming with us in every overnight bag from now until eternity.

Made from 100% organic cotton in a loose fit, so you can easily size up or down.

Styling tip: Perfect to take to the beach as a swimsuit cover-up, tuck into your favorite boyfriend jeans, or throw on as a cozy oversized sleeping shirt. For a more stylized look, knot up at the front and cuff the sleeves. Girl, you’re looking good in those opinions!

COMMITMENT TO ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

We know that the fashion industry produces a tremendous amount of environmental waste and often employs unethical labor practices. That’s why we’re committed to finding the most environmentally and socially responsible practices for Sendiri, every step of the way.

Our pieces are handmade in beautiful Bali, using recycled, organic, and sustainable fabrics, and incorporating non-toxic and minimal-waste inks and dying processes. We manufacture our products in a low-waste facility (think: less water, less plastic, more good vibes for planet Earth) that ensures employees are paid above-average wages, provided with medical insurance, and not overworked.

Even our paper products are printed at a facility that provides employment opportunities for underprivileged women on the island, and all items are shipped in 100% compostable mailers (a tree is planted in Indonesia for every packaging order we place). Yay!

We donate 5% of our profits to Bali Street Mums, a community project that works to end child begging, impoverishment, and human trafficking on the island by providing women and girls with job training, schooling, and healthcare. Our goal is to expand our ability to give, and to further develop our relationship with community projects on the island as Sendiri grows.

WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH SHIPPING?

All products are manufactured in Bali, and your purchases help keep 15 people employed — more important now than ever, as the tourism-reliant island has seen unprecedented economic hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The shirts are then distributed out of the United States, to ensure the quickest shipping and overall best customer service experience possible. We ship worldwide, and provide free shipping within the United States for orders of two or more shirts!

SHOP SMALL & SLOW THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Your support for Sendiri Label makes a difference in the lives of our local production team in Bali, in the lives of at-risk women and children on the island who will be provided with the healthcare, job training, and education from Bali Street Mums, and — of course — in the lives of two small business owners, Alexandra and Allison.

You can look good, feel good, and do good, knowing your consumer dollars are being spent with a business deeply commited to social responsibility and environmental sustainability.

We celebrate every single purchase our customers make, and are so grateful for your decision to shop small businesses and support slow & sustainable fashion this holiday season.

American travel photographer and writer, based on the beautiful island of Bali. Two years ago, I left my job as a Washington DC lawyer, sold everything I owned, and booked a one-way ticket to Indonesia to turn my creative dreams into reality. I have traveled to 60 countries, have worked with major airlines, luxury hotels, tourism boards, and fashion/adventure goods companies. When I’m not working or traveling, I spend my free time writing, doing yoga, learning to surf, or swimming at my favorite beaches in Uluwatu in south Bali.
