Which TV Shows Were The Streaming Industry’s Biggest Hits In 2022?

Alex Belsey

The streaming giants work hard to offer their audiences as much high-quality content as possible, which has led to widespread industry growth over recent years. And according to ExpressVPN’s blog piece, even Netflix has increased in popularity again after releasing the last season of Stranger Things, despite having lost subscribers in the first part of the year – which caused much discussion at the time.

So, among all the endless hours of content available to view via the multitude of streaming platforms, which were the most streamed shows of 2022? Let’s take a look.

House of the Dragon - HBO Max

After the eighth season of Game of Thrones, some fans were left with a bitter taste. So, it was only natural to be concerned that the House of the Dragon would make similar mistakes. And yes, while some episodes were too dark and the tempo too fast, overall, the show proved to be a gem that was better than many expected.

House of the Dragon can be enjoyed without seeing Game of Thrones, but it will make you miss that beloved show. That's a huge accomplishment!

Wednesday - Netflix

If you're a diehard fan of the original Addams Family, you've likely already added this program to your watchlist.

Following Wednesday Addams as she has to cope with a murder investigation while painfully navigating high school and developing her psychic skills, an intriguing whodunnit is skillfully woven into the entertaining horror story.

The White Lotus - HBO Max

The White Lotus, a comedic drama that picked up steam during its second season in 2022, has become a must-see for many viewers. Set in a holiday resort staffed by a variety of kooky, intriguing characters, the engaging mix of comedy, drama, and satire about wealthy vacationers has proven to be a powerful hook for many millions of viewers.

In particular, the second season of The White Lotus was a superbly crafted example of prestige, event television, containing layers upon layers of subtext and a bevy of excellent acting performances that have received many nominations and awards.

Bad Sisters - Apple TV+

Sharon Horgan's adaptation of the Flemish serial Clan, about a group of sisters plotting to kill their brother-in-law John Paul, is a delightfully dark triumph.

Horgan's scathing wit, the great performances, and Claes Bang's villainous turn make it irresistible. The notion is insane on paper, yet after spending even a second in John Paul's company, you'll find yourself rooting for the sisters to succeed!

From Scratch - Netflix

Fans of romantic dramas will swoon over this miniseries.

From Scratch, starring Zoe Saldana and Eugenio Mastrandrea, follows Amy as she falls in love with an Italian chef, despite his family's reservations about his potential union to an African American lady.

And Amy's parents also want her to finish law school, adding another wrench to their whirlwind relationship.

Severance - Apple TV

In this dystopian drama, the tech firm Lumon Industries has a system in place to keep the work and personal lives of its workforce separate in their minds, with the goal being to improve morale and increase productivity.

But when Mark (Adam Scott) learns there may be more to the arrangement, a suspenseful psychological drama rich in conspiracies develops…

One of the best new shows of 2022, this program also features great performances from the likes of Britt Lower, Christopher Walken, John Turturro, and Patricia Arquette.

The Sandman - Netflix

Based on a comic book series by Neil Gaiman, this TV drama follows Dream, the personification of dreams and nightmares – who is also known as The Sandman and Lord Morpheus - when he breaks out of prison after 106 years.

In the realm he controls, which is known as ‘The Dreaming’ the tragic main character endeavors to find his long-lost friends (including Death), defeat his many enemies, and restore his ruined kingdom to glory.

As usual for Gaiman (and his co-creator David S. Goyer), the show is a dark, fantastical spectacle that’s full of life and richness.

Creating Your Future Favorites

Whereas previously Netflix was the sole giant in the online streaming industry, many big household name brands like Apple, HBO, Disney, and Amazon have been entering the space in recent years and bringing some of their best ideas to the party.

This is wonderful news for consumers, as the depth and breadth of quality tv shows available to stream is growing ever greater, and this is likely to continue into coming years as the so-called ‘Streaming Wars’ rages on.

Hopefully, this will lead to more top-quality films and tv shows being made, watched, enjoyed, and adored throughout 2023 and beyond!
