One of the twin Army officers who former President Trump blamed for his impeachment scandal, Yevgeny "Eugene" Vindman, is running for Congress as a Democrat, which might put him on the ballot alongside Trump.

A confrontation with Trump supporters is not one of them, Vindman said, adding that he has "few things that scare me" after 25 years in the Army. To quote the candidate, "being able to tackle [Republican] extremism is going to be important, and so is providing a contrast of government that works for people versus chaos."

Ukrainian-born Vindman worked as Trump's National Security Council deputy legal advisor. Since his brother Alexander testified to Congress about Trump's phone contacts with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, both he and Alexander have been thrust into the public eye.

Like his brother, Eugene Vindman was a behind-the-scenes advisor for him during those processes before being fired as reprisal by the Trump administration. In recent years, he has been a vocal proponent of more American aid to Ukraine.

Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Virginia, said on Monday that she will be leaving Congress in 2019 to run for governor of Virginia in 2025. Vindman has stated that sustained relationship with Ukraine will be a central theme of his campaign to succeed Spanberger.

Vindman intends to work on veteran support programs and maintain the military's non-political orientation in addition to addressing local issues in his northern Virginia area.

He then continued, "Both Alex and I have borne the brunt of this, and we have watched things get worse."

When Trump last ran for office, I was serving in the military and so unable to take any active political role. This time, I'd want to contrast the concept of integrity and the principles held by the Army with the image that Donald Trump is projecting.

Trump has previously made social media attacks against both Vindman brothers. According to recent surveys, he is currently the most popular candidate for the Republican nomination for president in 2024.

Vindman, who served in Iraq with the Army, will likely face a primary fight for Spanberger's seat in March and a Republican opponent in the general election in November. The seat was held by a Republican representative for 25 years prior to Spanberger's 2018 victory.
