Unicoi County Schools to Offer Free Meals for All Students

Program will begin in January 2024

The Unicoi County School district has announced that free breakfast and lunch will be available to all students in all schools beginning in January of 2024.

In a letter to parents and guardians of students in the district, Judy McCurry of the district's school nutrition department said the program will be offered on a pilot basis and may be continued depending on student participation.

Unicoi County is able to offer free breakfast and lunch to all students by way of taking advantage of the Community Eligibility Provision of the USDA's school meals program.

This provision allows districts with specified concentrations of low income students to offer no cost meals to all students and receive a reimbursement from the federal government.

The letter to parents notes:

"Your children may participate in these meal programs without paying a fee or submitting a meal application. Our CEP implementation is a pilot program that will begin on January 3, 2024 and will continue based on student participation."
