Aftyn Behn wins special election to fill Nashville seat in legislature
Progressive activist Aftyn Behn, who previously worked for the national Indivisible movement as an organizer in Tennessee, is now headed to the Tennessee General Assembly as a state representative for Nashville's 51st legislative district.
Behn claimed the win in a recent special election held as a result of the death of former State Rep. Bill Beck earlier this year.
As an organizer and political activist, Behn worked on issues such as Medicaid expansion and opposing school vouchers.
Behn explained her desire to serve as a natural outgrowth of her advocacy work:
"I've spent the last six years defending our democracy, pushing back on abortion bans, and drawing attention to the attacks on our freedoms both statewide and nationally. As your Representative, I promise I'll work tirelessly for the issues that matter most to you."
Behn received more than 10,000 votes in the general election, defeating Republican David Hooven and Independent Annabelle Lee.
