Can an Elite Ski Valley Survive Covid
Can a global pandemic close a ski resort? We should all hope so! In 2021, COVID-19 closed Vail ski resort and hopefully changed the way these tourist centric areas thought about tourism. Locally, Vail Resorts is known for cutting its bottom line, putting profit before people and deconstructing beloved resort towns into easily digestible (and profitable) slices. In this valley, many say the corporation intentionally deconstructs businesses and reallocates resources from locally run enterprises to those that can be controlled under the corporate thumb of Vail Resorts. Perhaps for one purpose. Profit. Sure, Vail Resorts and many other mountain town areas cater to the elite snow seekers and profit. However, locals, perhaps considered peasants by second or third homeowners in the Vail area, may be able to change the paradigm thanks to COVID. Even if they can't afford to live there.
