One of the busiest intersections in Joliet will be even busier next week. The city of Joliet has announced that there will be daily lane closures on Illinois Route 53 from Monday, January 16th to Thursday, January 19th. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane northbound and southbound on Illinois Route 53 between Patterson Road and Doris Avenue. The lane closures will occur every day from Monday to Thursday next week between 9 AM and 3 PM CST.
Reducing the road to one lane at this intersection due to this construction means that you should be taking a detour next week. You will not be able to avoid the potholes under the viaduct. Plus, you will not be able to go around the plethora of trucks that are on this road.
Instead of requesting for IDOT to fill up the potholes on the state route, Union Pacific Railroad will be working on the bridge that crosses over Illinois Route 53 between the two intersections. The bridge is in need of major repair in which the steel beams holding the bridge up must be either fixed or replaced.
That gives you another reason to avoid this road for next week. The bridge could collapse at any time while construction workers are repairing the bridge. Fortunately, they will be able to build this bridge back better than the bridge was in the past.
The bridge needs reinforcement because the bridge over Route 53 is approximately 14 feet high. The average height for a truck carrying a trailer is between 13.5 feet and 14 feet. As a result, plenty of trucks regularly scrape the bottom of the bridge.
