The Plainfield American Legion Marne Post #13 will be holding a Memorial Day Parade within the city of Plainfield on Monday, May 30th. The parade is held every year on this national holiday to honor the veterans that have died for this country.

The Memorial Day Parade will begin at 10:45 AM CST at Ira Jones Middle School. The address of the school is 15320 S. Wallin Drive. The parade route will then go east on Ottawa Street until the street ends at the intersection of Ottawa Street and Van Dyke Road.

The parade route then will go north on Van Dyke Road and then take a quick turn east into Settlers' Park in the heart of downtown Plainfield. The parade will take about fifteen minutes to complete.

After the parade, the American Legion will conduct a ceremony in Settlers' Park at around 11 AM CST. The ceremony will begin with a wreath laying at the park. The purpose of laying a wreath serves as a reminder that we must honor those who have fought for our freedom.

Then, there will be a rifle salute. The rifle salute represents how soldiers fought for American Independence. Normally, a 21-gun salute is done because the numbers of the year 1776 add up to twenty-one (1+7+7+6 = 21 for the mathematically challenged). Please remember not to stand in front of any of the rifles when the salute is being performed.

After the ceremony, make sure that you bring a lawn chair and stay for the band performance at the park. Music serves as a necessary catharsis to reflect on Memorial Day.

Grab a parking spot early at the school parking lot because the parade route will be closed off at 10:30 AM.
