The 147th running of the Preakness Stakes will be today at 7:01 Eastern Standard Time (EST) at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, MD.
Normally, the winner of the Kentucky Derby will race in the Preakness in an attempt to achieve immortality by securing the Triple Crown. However, the owners of Rich Strike decided to have the horse skip the Preakness in order to be well-rested for the Belmont in three weeks.
Not having the Kentucky Derby winner at Pimlico takes most of the luster off of the Preakness. Nevertheless, nine horses will look to secure the triumph today because winning a Triple Crown race is still pretty important in horse racing.
Here is the lineup for the 147th Preakness Stakes at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
2. Creative Minister
4. Secret Oath
5. Early Voting
6. Happy Jack
Having only nine horses in the Preakness means that even the horses that are lined up to the outside are not at a disadvantage in comparison to the 20 horses that raced two weeks ago at the Kentucky Derby.
Many other horse owners used the same strategy as the owner of Rich Strike of saving their horses for Belmont because only three horses that raced in the Kentucky Derby will be racing today. The three horses are Simplification, Happy Jack, and Epicenter. Epicenter is the favorite for the Preakness because the horse finished second in the Kentucky Derby.
The horses that I will be rooting for based solely upon their names are Creative Minister, Happy Jack, and Armagnac.
