Festival of Gnomes scheduled for this weekend

A Christmastime tradition is back once again in Joliet with the 45th annual "Festival of Gnomes" at the Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park and Theatre this weekend. The "Festival of Gnomes" will be held on Saturday, December 4th and Sunday, December 5th at 2 PM CST.

Gnomes were used in Norse mythology as little people that live underground and guard treasures. On Christmas Day, gnomes would pop up from underground and deliver presents to everyone. Gnomes are sort of different from elves because gnomes do not help Santa Claus. Think of gnomes like they are independent contractors for spreading Christmas cheer.

The "Festival of Gnomes" begins with a live gnome show. The play runs for about 90 minutes without an intermission. Last year, the play was shown virtually because so many children did not want the "Festival of Gnomes" to be cancelled due to the pandemic. That is how popular the "Festival of Gnomes" really is throughout the community.

After the play is over, you will be able to meet the members of the play. You will also be able to peruse the Gnome Gift Shop where you can buy one of the many handmade treasures from the gnomes to take home as a keepsake.

The biggest seller at the Gnome Gift Shop is the gnome cap. You can buy a large pointed gnome cap for $3. Participants that go to a future "Festival of Gnomes" and wear the gnome cap that they previously bought receive a free tassel that is attached to the gnome cap. If you do not want to wait until next year to add a tassel to your gnome cap, then you can buy a personalized pin for $1.

Desserts and beverages will be served after the play. A cookie plate with hot cocoa will only cost $1, while soft drinks and adult beverages will also be sold as well.

If you are interested in going to the "Festival of Gnomes," you can buy tickets at this link or you can buy tickets at the door for $5. You will be able to spend some time with your family and spread some #HolidayJoy for the month of December.
