The Village of University Park will be holding their annual Back to School Celebration on Saturday, August 21. The festivities will begin on Saturday morning at 10 AM CST with a parade beginning at the corners of Blackhawk Drive and Sandra Drive.

The parade will end at Palmer Park in University Park (A park within a park - Inception) located at 655 Olmstead Lane. After the parade is complete, the celebration will continue at Palmer Park filled with music, fun, food, and other activities to keep participants entertained throughout the day.

The parade will not be too long. The starting point of the parade will begin at Blackhawk Drive and Sandra Drive, two blocks south of University Parkway. From this intersection to Palmer Park is about one and a half miles away. The parade route will go south on Blackhawk Drive and then east on Olmstead Lane (typo in the flyer) to Palmer Park. The parade is led by the University Park Fire Department.

Members of the community will be looking forward to being back in this parade since the last celebration was in 2019 because so many people from the community were in the parade two years ago. Be sure to stand on the sidewalk if you are a candy lover because people in the parade will be throwing candy from their vehicles during the procession.

After the parade, there will be an exciting program involving members of the community. Some of the performances will include MCing, singing, DJing, and comedy. Expect some big names to show up because someone influential always takes the time to show up for the University Park Back to School Celebration each and every year.

Two years ago, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White showed up to the festivities. He might show up again this year. You could ask him why the lines at the Driver's License facilities are so long every time you have to renew your identification.

At the end of the celebration, there will be a backpack giveaway for the children so that they will be prepared for the upcoming school season. There will also be a COVID-19 vaccine mobile unit sponsored by the Will County Health Department at Palmer Park from 10 AM CST until 4 PM CST. They will be passing out free admission tickets to Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, IL.
