The fitness industry has sold us all sorts of sophisticated equipment and workout regimes in hopes of keeping us ultra-fit. But I believe the real magic lies in mastering the basics. And for that reason, here is the most underrated workout of all time — WALKING.

You heard that right. As a health coach, the first thing I do with all my clients is set a weekly step goal in addition to their regular workouts. Quite a number of them come back and say that their friends make fun of them because apparently — walking is for the elderly. I have no words for anyone who disparages it with that reasoning, it’s ludicrous!

Most of my clients walk as part of their daily routine and it has improved their quality of life

Here are six reasons why walking is amazing:

1. Walking Is Low Intensity and Relaxing

Walking is low-intensity cardio. After a long day of sitting at work, it’s a great way to relax and get moving. If you are tracking your steps count, there is no reason for you to do it all at once.

You can walk to the grocery store, take an afternoon stroll and go shopping with your mom

Walk frequently throughout the day and notice your life change.

2. Walking Is Easy to Do Anytime, Anywhere

Walking does not require any equipment or special location such as a gym or a playground. All you need is some free space to move around. It is convenient to do anytime and requires no pre-requisites such as a warm-up or prework. Perfect for those who travel for work. If you have a nice grassy field, you can even walk barefoot.

I consider walking during vacations as part of my workout. It helps me stay sane mentally and I don’t feel guilty about missing my workouts.

3. Walking Helps Reduce Soreness After Intense Exercise

Walking is one of the best forms of active recovery. If you’re a runner, you can also go for a slow jog. Walking or jogging at a leisurely pace leads to more blood pumping through the muscles which may help you recover sooner.

I perform high-intensity strength training twice a week. For the rest of the days, walking along with some light stretching helps me recover well.

Lesser frequency and, higher intensity works better with strength training as it allows enough time for your body to recover and adapt. Walking allows for some low-intensity movement throughout the day.

4. Walking Is an Easy Way to Burn Extra Calories

If weight loss is one of your goals, walking is an excellent way to burn some extra calories. A 70 Kg person burns approximately 232 calories walking at a moderate (3.5 mph) pace on a flat surface for one hour. Do it consistently at least 5 days a week and that’s 1000 extra calories every week. If you have not been exercising, starting with a regular walking schedule is a great way to get started.

5. Walking Increases Mental Clarity

Walking can improve self-perception and self-esteem. It can also have a profound impact on your mood and sleep quality. Walking reduces stress, anxiety and fatigue. Physically active people have up to a 30% reduced risk of becoming depressed, and staying active helps those who are depressed recover

A short, 15-minute walk can help clear your mind, improve mood, and boost your energy levels. I get some of my best ideas while walking.

6. Walking Is an Excellent Way to Unwind

Walking is a great way to relax and unwind after a long day. Try taking a walk and noticing things you’ve never noticed before. Or put on your earphones and walk while talking on the phone or listening to your favourite music (or podcast). Walking is also a wonderful way to connect with your friends and loved ones.

Going for a long walk with your partner is a great way to have quality conversations while improving your health
