The several outdoor activities scheduled for this weekend have been given the all-clear by New York City officials as the smoke from the Canadian wildfires has subsided and the air quality has improved.
Long Island, Rockland, and Westchester counties, as well as New York City, no longer have an Air Quality Alert that has been in effect for many days.
The warnings to stay indoors and to postpone outdoor events were gradually rescinded as the air quality improved, and this came in time for a number of weekend festivities, including Sunday's National Puerto Rican Day Parade. Mayor Eric Adams said on Thursday, "I'm looking forward, if the weather permits, to marching in the parade."
The Triple Crown Horse Racing
The third and final leg of the Triple Crown in horse racing, the Belmont Stakes, will be "a last-minute decision," according to New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who also issued air quality restrictions for racing around the state. In the event that Elmont's air quality index rose beyond 200 on Saturday night, Hochul stated the race would be postponed. Only horses that pass a veterinarian's respiratory check would be allowed to compete if the AQI is between 151 and 200. On Friday morning, the AQI was below 100 at the location.
At around midday on Friday, the Governor's Ball Music Festival in Flushing Meadows, Corona Park, began as planned. It is anticipated to last until late Sunday night.
The intense rivalry between the Yankees and Red Sox resumes Friday night in the Bronx.
