The man from New York who was accused of killing a 20-year-old woman after her car's driver apparently pulled up to the wrong location claimed that hunters were to blame for the shooting. He was charged with murder.
Following the killing of Kaylin Gillis on April 15, Kevin Monahan, 65, told law enforcement officers trying to talk him out of his Hebron, New York, home that he had been in bed since 8:30 p.m. and that "hunters shooting up here all the time," according to court documents reviewed by the Albany Times Union.
Monahan Wasn't Cooperative
Monahan ordered the deputies to "leave me alone" and "get out of my yard, so I can go back to bed" as he defied their orders to leave his house.
Monahan Pulled His Shotgn Out And Fired At Gillis' Car
He allegedly fired shots at a car. The driver made a false turn and accidentally stopped into Monahan's driveway while Gillis and three other pals were traveling in the vehicle from Schuylerville. They were heading for the home of another acquaintance. When Monahan emerged from the house and pulled out his shotgun, the driver was attempting to turn the car around when one of Monahan's bullets struck Gillis.
After the incident, Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy reported that the automobile's occupants did not approach Monahan while he was in his driveway and did not get out of the car at any point. He claimed that the region is highly rural, has lots of dirt roads, and is simple to get lost in.
The group dialed 911, and emergency responders came running to the scene to start CPR on Gillis. At the scene, she was pronounced deceased.
