Police in New York City are looking for someone who they believe stole religious statues and other things worth thousands of dollars from a catholic church in Queens earlier this month.
The Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church on 80 Street was reportedly broken into on May 18 at around 5:30 p.m. by an unknown person who then reportedly used tools to force open an interior door, according to the NYPD.
This guy is accused of stealing various religious objects and statues valued at $890, totaling roughly $60. The things were for sale at the church, according to the police. The person took the things, then ran away.
At the time of the incident, nobody was present in the church
The Diocese of Brooklyn expressed its appreciation for the incident's lack of injuries and hoped that the statues would be returned in response. The house of worship's namesake holiday, Our Lady of Fatima's Feast, which is observed by the Roman Catholic Church on May 13th, was five days before to the robbery.
According to detectives, the burglar entered the Queens church through an unlocked door before using sophisticated tools to pry open an inner perimeter door to the gift store.
According to Father DaCosta, he managed to escape with money, jewelry, sculptures, and other sacred memorabilia. More than $1,000 in cash, according to the police, as well as religious objects, were seized. No one was present at the church when the robbery occurred, CBS2 was informed.
Anyone with information on this event is urged to contact the NYPD Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or 1-888-57-PISTA (74782) for Spanish-speaking callers.
