Authorities claim that a mentally ill guy with a knife was shot by police in the Bronx.
The 42-year-old victim was seen walking through a building's lobby in a video obtained by Eyewitness News. Seconds later, an NYPD officer with a gun pulled back away from the same man, who authorities claim was approaching them with a huge knife.
Victim's Father Called 911
A guy who was allegedly advancing towards NYPD officers with a knife on Sunday while experiencing a mental health crisis was shot by officers and gravely injured, according to authorities. Police were called to allegations of an emotionally disturbed person brandishing a knife at 2685 Grand Concourse in the Bronx around 10 a.m. according to NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell.
The victim's father, Santos Dela Cruz, made the phone call appealing for assistance for his son. Cruz called 911 dispatchers to report that his son, 42, was experiencing a "medical episode" and believed he was being followed and harassed. According to investigators, he allegedly threatened his father that he would kill any police officers who arrived.
Report By NYPD
According to reports by NYPD, two officers approached the father outdoors and started moving toward the building's entrance. When the officers approach, the subject emerges, becomes visibly upset, drops a bag, pulls out a huge kitchen knife, and moves closer to them, according to Chell.
