As dozens of people protested a Drag Story Hour event in New York City on Sunday, one guy was detained and another was injured, according to videos posted on social media and local news sources.
The Proud Boys, a far-right extremist group, looked to have at least some of the demonstrators as members.
Letitia James Was Hosting The Drag Story Hour Event
Letitia James, the attorney general of New York, was organizing a Drag Story Hour event at the LGBTQ Community Center in Manhattan's West Village district, where drag performers were reading children's books to children and their families.
Drag has long-standing roots in the LGBTQ community, and the Stonewall Inn, perhaps the site of the modern LGBTQ rights movement's inception, is conveniently close to the center.
The Video of Detained By Police
A journalist connected to the local news outlet FreedomNews.tv shared a video of a demonstrator being detained by police while donning a gold Anonymous mask on Twitter.
The masked guy, Robert Porco, 53, of Fishkill, New York, "was detained and was charged with Assault," a police spokesperson stated in an email, adding that "he approached a victim and punched him in the face."
The man had "swelling to his nose" and "physical damage to his face," but wasn't hospitalized, the representative claimed.
Another Protester Leaves The Protest With Bloodoed Face
Another protester leaves the protest with blood on his face in a different video that the same Twitter account posted.
He was joined by another protester wearing a Proud Boys sweater, and they were encircled by a large number of local reporters.
He stated, I came here to help, not get the s—- pounded out of me.
In the distance, counterprotesters could be heard yelling, "Go back to Long Island" and "F—- the Proud Boys."
