In 2021, the Marijuana Regulation and Taxes Act was approved by the legislature and made official. But since then, there have been hurdles to getting legal cannabis sales up and running.
Today, discussions are taking place to alter the law and facilitate the sale of legal marijuana. Legislators first want to enact legislation that would increase enforcement and give the state the power to close down unlawful businesses that have become a major annoyance in New York City and other parts of the state (Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, Staten Island, and Manhattan).
Legally recognized dispensaries are undercut by illegal businesses. The tax code would be completely rewritten as a result of the proposed amendments. Some think it's too pricey as it is right now.
New York Lawmakers' New Revisions Should Also Highlight The Old Issues of City
There are several ideas as to how the law came to be passed with so many flaws.
Although the law was passed, Andrew Cuomo, our governor, failed to establish the agency and get things moving, according to Krueger. So, people were sitting there and waiting for you 'where are you? Where have you been? And despite our efforts to persuade him to act, he resisted.
Also, New York's law was designed to give people who had previously been arrested for marijuana-related offenses preference when operating legal cannabis businesses. Currently, that is being contested in two cases on both the federal and state levels.
