According to a new study, gun violence reached record highs nationwide in 2021, with 3,500 shooting casualties in New York alone. This caused generational harm to the economy, families, and communities.
The research by United Hospital Fund and Boston Consulting Group estimates that 158,216 persons in the United States were killed or injured by guns in 2021, or 48 casualties for every 100,000 people.
More than 48,000 people died from firearms nationwide in 2021, including around 1,000 people in New York, which was the greatest number since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began keeping track of these tragic incidents in 1981.
18 Victims Per 100,000 Population
Yet, with roughly 18 victims per 100,000 population, New York had the 48th lowest per capita rate of gun deaths. The study indicated that the national rate was 48 victims per 100,000 people, which is significantly higher than that of other high-income nations.
At 105 and 92 victims per 100,000 people, respectively, Mississippi and Louisiana are the top two Southern states with the highest per-capita firearm victim rates. Many upstate New York counties have some of the highest rates of firearm fatalities overall between 2018 and 2021.
Meanwhile, New York lawmakers have strengthened their red flag statute and banned firearms from some public spaces in recent years in an effort to reduce gun crime.
