On Friday morning, a fire broke out at a home in the Bronx, badly injuring a woman and child.
Around six in the morning, flames started to spread inside the Morrisania home on Tinton Avenue. Gerald Richards claimed that shouting and other loud noises woke him up.
The 65-year-old broke a window, cutting his hand in the process. When he finally made down safely down the house's side, he shouted for his daughter-in-law to drop his one-and-a-half-year-old grandson.
"She was supposed to throw the baby to me so I could grab it once I opened the window and reached the back", but Richards said the smoke was too intense.
Firefighters used a ladder to enter the house
Firefighters ultimately utilized a ladder to enter the second level in order to evacuate 24-year-old Carrie Andrews and her son Jason.
They were brought to Jacobi Medical Center, where their status is rated as critical. After receiving care, Richards was discharged from the hospital.
The initial responders, five EMTs from a local ambulance station, were given treatment for smoke inhalation.
Fire Department Chief Said 'those guys did a great job, guiding the fire units'
FDNY Deputy Chief Brian Shovlin noted, "Those guys did a great job in guiding the fire units, letting the fire units know that there were trapped citizens."
Fire marshals spent the afternoon determining what started the wind-driven fire that also caused damage to the neighboring house.
