Living in New York, particularly in the Big Apple, is not inexpensive due to the expense of living, which is increasing at what seems to be a constant rate.
Many young New York professionals claim they need a side job to make ends meet because of this.
According to a survey by the international recruiting agency Robert Walters, which has offices in Manhattan, 50% of New York workers under the age of 24 say they have a "side hustle," and 70% say it's "too dangerous" to concentrate on just one job as they may have done before the pandemic.
According to a poll, 55% of young New Yorkers with jobs said that having flexible hours and a hybrid work environment is essential since doing otherwise will harm their side business.
The survey also revealed that 56% of young professionals wanted a "portfolio career," which is the idea of using your abilities in a variety of ways and having numerous sources of income instead of just one employment at one organization.

- Almost three-quarters of young adults (18–24) say it's risky to work just one job.
- For their side hustles to be viable, 55% of young employees require hybrid jobs and flexible hours.
- 61% of 18 to 24-year-olds worry about their finances; many of them live paycheck to paycheck.
- The main barriers preventing older workers from pursuing a "side hustle" are family responsibilities, long job hours, and concern for burnout.
