Two small children were discovered dead in a Bronx family shelter on Saturday night, and a young mother is now facing charges in their deaths.
The boys, who were found in a tub with garments covering their bodies and multiple stab wounds, were found to be 3 years old and 11 months old. Down the hall neighbors claim to have overheard the pair yelling and fighting on Friday night.
After that argument, the father of the 11-month-old child allegedly slept in a car outside the residence. Police said that after receiving a 911 call, officers went to the Echo Place apartment on the third floor and discovered Dimone Fleming, 22, inside acting erratically and attempting to set things on fire.
NYPD And Department of Social Services Response
"Sometimes when I was attempting to fall asleep at night, I could actually hear them beating on each other and screaming. I need to slam on the wall to get them to stop" said a neighbor.
According to a statement from a Department of Social Services official, "This tragedy is shocking and very upsetting. We extend our sincere condolences to everyone who has been impacted and are ready to offer them any assistance they require during this extraordinarily trying time."
Residents of the shelter reported that the staff there changes frequently.
"It's regrettable. With individuals, I would anticipate psychology and having someone go through the procedure. They enter, go through intake, and complete the procedure, but they don't do any of that" explained the neighbor.
