Canada To Ban Huawei and ZTE on Cellular Networks

Abdul Ghani

The Canadian government has taken its time over many years. Now the network operators are to expand the equipment of Huawei and ZTE by 2027. Canada's Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne has said Huawei and ZTE equipment is too risky to be allowed on Canada's 5G networks. As the online magazine The Logic reports, the equipment must also be removed from LTE networks by 2027. Security Minister Marco Mendicino said on Twitter: "Today we announced our intention to ban Huawei and ZTE from access to Canada's telecommunications system." This was preceded by an intensive examination within the framework of the 5 Eyes secret service alliance.

It is the government's responsibility to protect Canadians from growing cyber threats, stressed Mendicino. The allegations against Huawei were first raised by the controversial Trump administration. However, neither Trump nor his successor, Joe Biden has ever provided evidence of Huawei's cooperation with the Chinese secret services or of backdoors in the products.

The two leading Canadian mobile operators Telus and Bell (BCE) announced in the summer of 2020 that they would expand their 5G network with Ericsson and Nokia. However, network operators often rely on a multi-vendor strategy and thus on several suppliers.

Huawei is present on Canadian networks

Of the big three Canadian carriers, Telus has the strongest ties to Huawei, with much of its 4G network coming from the Chinese equipment maker. In February, Telus emphasized pushing the rollout of 5G with Huawei equipment.

In Canada, Bell is considered one of the most aggressive defenders of the cooperation with Huawei, despite allegations of espionage from the USA. "We are working with multiple vendors to build our 5G network - just like our successful 4G LTE build, which has included Cisco, Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia, and others," Bell spokesman Marc Choma wrote in an email to BNN Bloomberg. "Huawei has been a reliable and innovative partner in the past and we would consider working with them on 5G if the government allows participation."

The most important mobile operators in the US neighboring country Canada are Bell, Telus, Rogers, and Freedom Mobile (Shaw). Huawei also operates an important research facility there.
