US Military Successfully Tested Hypersonic Missiles

With the successful test of a weapons system, the USA has reduced its gap with Russia and China. Secrecy to avoid provocation: The US military successfully tested a hypersonic cruise missile in March. Because of the war in Ukraine, the test has only just been announced.

The test with the so-called Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept (HAWC) took place off the west coast of the USA. The missile was launched from a B-52 bomber.

First, it was accelerated by a conventional engine before igniting the Supersonic Combustion Ramjet (Scramjet) developed by Aerojet Rocketdyne. The HAWC then flew a good 555 kilometers at an altitude of almost 20 kilometers at a cruising speed of more than Mach 5, said the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

A Scramjet Has No Moving Parts

In a scramjet, the air is not compressed by impellers, but rather by the speed at which it is forced into the combustion chamber, where it is heated. The advantage is that the engine does not have any moving parts. This allows higher speeds than with a conventional jet engine.

Hypersonic weapons are considered an important innovation in military technology. Because of the high speed, countermeasures are difficult. However, the USA is lagging behind in development. Multiple tests failed. China and Russia are further along. The Russian hypersonic glider Avangard is said to reach Mach 20.

Russia has already put several hypersonic weapons into service including the Avangard. The Kinzhal hypersonic missile was used in the war against Ukraine.

It was the second successful test of a HAWC. In September last year, a HAWC developed by the US armaments company Raytheon was flown successfully. The HAWC tested in March comes from Lockheed Martin. The US military has kept this test secret until now, reports the US television station CNN, so as not to provoke Russia any further.
