Mackay and her son, Charlie, had been living out of their utility vehicle without any heating or cooling during extreme weather. Desperate to save her son, who has ADHD and other mental issues, the single mother sought help online. She posted on Facebook explaining her life situation and how badly she needed to find a safe place to park the utility vehicle.

Mackay was alarmed by the response she got to the post. Several men replied that they were going after her, scaring her all the more.

Fortunately, a person with a good heart, therapist Claire Orange, noticed Mackay’s post and the shocking responses she got and realized she had to do something to help the struggling mother. Claire Orange allowed Mackay and Charlie to live in her house.

“There is a backyard; he can set up his trampoline and swing set, the life a boy should have,” Mackay told the media. Crying, the mother said it was more than she had hoped for.

In addition to offering Mackay and Charlie a safe place to sleep, Claire also started a GoFundMe page to collect money to secure the mother and son's life. Ultimately, she collected $21,000 for Charlie’s treatment and hoped the money would help the boy grow safely.

“Claire and her family have been amazing; it has allowed me to take a breath and relax, you know, for five or 10 minutes here and there,” Mackay said.

Homelessness is a crucial issue in the USA, with around 582,000 Americans experiencing homelessness in 2022. Although the number of homeless people in the country has decreased over the years, joblessness and climbing housing costs keep more and more people from finding a roof over their heads.
