Mom in moral dilemma after she goes into labor while her son is dying of cancer: “I need to be beside my son”

Chelsey Gregory had her hands tied with her son Alfie, who was undergoing treatment for leukemia for the second time since his birth. She was distraught and spent all her time in the hospital beside him.

She had gone home with her mother for a day when she experienced a sharp shooting pain up her back. She tried ignoring it in the beginning, but as it intensified and became intolerable, she went to a nearby hospital.

“Do you know you’re in labor?” he asked puzzledly. Chelsey was stunned. She was so occupied with Alfie that she didn’t notice she was pregnant.

She looked at her mother, “This can’t be happening.” She couldn’t afford to have a baby when Alfie needed all her attention. The realization that she might be unable to spend all her time with her seven-year-old boy while he was fighting cancer hurt her.

The nurses rushed her to the delivery suite, and Chelsey called the hospital where Alfie was. “He’s been moved to intensive care,” his doctor told her. After a few hours, they called her from the hospital to let her know that Alfie wasn’t doing well. “Alfie doesn’t have long left,” the doctor said.

But by then, the labor was in full fling. Chelsey felt helpless, “I need to be beside my son,” she thought. After hours, she gave birth to a baby boy "Put him up for adoption,” she told the midwife without even looking at the boy. All she had in her mind was to get to Alfie.

As soon as she was discharged, she rushed to Alfie’s hospital. Luckily, his condition stabilized over the next few days. Then, she started to feel bad about giving up her newborn son. So she contacted the social workers and got him back.

When she introduced the baby to Alfie, his eyes grew wide and shone with joy. “I’m going to help look after you,” he told the baby. She named him Mason and recollected how he made Alfie happy. Alfie treated Mason like his son and even told everyone at the hospital the newborn was his baby.

But Alfie's condition worsened over the next few days, and the doctors said he only had months to live. But Alfie's condition deteriorated quickly, and he passed away in a few days.
