How accommodating should one be to a house guest?

Letting friends and family stay at one’s house is a great way to bond but might require extra work. It includes readying the house, buying and cooking food, and more. Nevertheless, it can be an enjoyable time for both parties unless the house guest becomes demanding and impolite.

This topic was highlighted in a recent Reddit post about a man who demanded the hostess make waffles for breakfast. This online post went viral with over 10K upvotes and 1.2K comments and was published in Newsweek by Taylor McCloud.

Is it right to ignore a house guest’s demands?

The author starts the post by saying that her sister-in-law and brother-in-law (sister-in-law’s husband) came to stay at their house. While they were shifting the couple’s belongings into the guest room, her brother-in-law, whom she had met like three times before, said waffles would be great for breakfast.

The author brushed it away as a poor joke and thought she couldn’t cook it anyway because they didn’t have a waffle iron. So she made eggs, beans, and toast for breakfast.

When the author’s brother-in-law arrived with her sister-in-law, he enquired where the waffles were, and the author told them she didn't make any. Then he asked why she hadn’t, which annoyed her. So she replied, “This isn’t a restaurant.’

He further argued, implying that they were guests and their needs should be considered. He finally told her he was allergic to beans and whether he told the author this didn’t matter because they were guests.

Hosting demanding guests can be difficult

Like those hosting, the guests have certain do’s and don'ts to ensure their hosts enjoy having them over. One of the don’ts is not to be demanding.

However, the author’s brother-in-law didn’t know this and demanded she makes waffles without revealing why he wanted them.

As things got worse between the author and her brother-in-law, her husband intervened and asked the couple to either eat what the author cooked or grab breakfast from elsewhere. This prompted the couple to leave the author’s house.

Now the author is wondering whether she is a lousy host for making eggs, beans, and toast even after her brother-in-law specifically asked for waffles.
