Hike to Oregon's Moraine Lake

Not to be confused with Moraine Lake in British Columbia, Oregon has it's own Moraine Lake and it's beautiful!

Hike to Moraine Lake

Located high in the mountains in Three Sisters Wilderness is Moraine Lake. One of the quietest lakes in the area, most skip it while they head to the peak of South Sister.

This hike starts at Devil's Lake and the large parking lot. During the summer, this parking lot fills up quickly. With paddle boarders and campers on Devil's Lake, South Sister hikers and campers and day use for the area.

Head to the pit toilets and walk right past them into the trees to pick up the trail.

It's a quick hike until you have to cross the road. Be extra careful here. The cars race through and there are a couple blind corners.

Once you cross the road you reach the trailhead. At this point, you will have to fill out a day permit for the hike. Make sure to fill out one for each couple in the group. It helps with funding.

This 5 mile round trip hike has 1,473' in elevation gain and it's all at the beginning. Take some time as you may feel the elevation as well. At around 4.25 miles you will break the tree line.

Then at 5 miles you hit the turn to go right to the lake. If you go straight it is the trail to South Sister.

Moraine lake is a great spot to rest for the afternoon or take a break for the night to camp.

Enjoy this beautiful lake and remember to LEAVE NO TRACE.
