We do a lot of research about the area we are traveling to. Specifically for free camping and where the best places to do it. Most of the time we like being off the beaten path, where no one is, but sometimes it is just easier and depending on the situation, more convenient to park in a designated area. In Oregon, one of the many SnoParks is a great option throughout the year. Rules vary depending on if you are within the November 1-April 30 (winter) or May 1-October 31 (summer). Just check the local national forest for that the SnoPark. Some of them may not allow it, but there are not that many.

You can get a super bloom in the desert in southern California, cherry blossoms in Washington DC, and fields of Lupines in Idaho. It makes hiking and mountain biking along the flowing compact trails a dream. The best spot in Washington that we have found to do this is in Wenatchee.
