One killed after car overturns and catches fire on Interstate 5, CHP reports
A tragic incident unfolded on Interstate 5 South, just south of the Penrose Street Onramp, as a solo vehicle overturned, resulting in a fatality.
The California Highway Patrol reported a vehicle on fire and the closure of the Penrose Street Onramp to southbound I-5.
The incident occurred at approximately 6:03 PM Saturday, when CHP received reports of a solo vehicle crash involving an overturned and unidentified colored SUV. The vehicle, with a sole occupant, had overturned on the right shoulder, and the situation escalated as the SUV caught fire.
Emergency responders, including the Los Angeles Fire Department were dispatched to the scene.
Unfortunately, the vehicle's sole occupant did not survive the crash, and the coroner was summoned to the location.
The precise details of the crash and the identity of the deceased are pending further investigation.
The CHP initiated a SigAlert, shutting down the Penrose Street Onramp to southbound I-5 for an unknown duration as emergency crews worked to clear the scene. The towing service was requested to remove the overturned vehicle.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are piecing together the events leading up to the fatal crash. The damaged guardrail on the right side of the onramp and the overturned SUV paint a grim picture of the incident.
Motorists in the area are advised to seek alternative routes due to the temporary closure of the Penrose Street Onramp. The circumstances surrounding the crash, including potential factors and the sequence of events leading to the vehicle overturning, remain under investigation by the CHP.
